Around The World in 80 Plants: An Edible Perennial Vegetable Adventure for Temperate Climates, by Stephen Barstow

This book takes us on an original and inspiring adventure around the temperate world, introducing us to the author’s top eighty perennial leafy-green vegetables. We are taken underground gardening in Tokyo, beach gardening in the UK, and traditional roof gardening in the Norwegian mountains. . . . There are stories of the wild foraging traditions of indigenous people in all continents: from the Sámi people of northern Norway to the Maori of New Zealand, the rich food traditions of the Mediterranean peoples, the high-altitude food plants of the Sherpas in the Himalayas, wild mountain vegetables in Japan and Korea, and the wild aquatic plant that sustained Native American tribes with myriad foodstuffs and other products.

Around the World in 80 Plants will be of interest to both traditional vegetable and ornamental gardeners, as well as anyone interested in permaculture, forest gardening, foraging, slow food, gourmet cooking, and ethnobotany. A thorough description is given of each vegetable, its traditions, stories, cultivation, where to source seed and plants, and how to propagate it. Sprinkled with recipes inspired by local traditional gastronomy, this is a fascinating book, an entertaining adventure, and a real milestone in climate-friendly vegetable growing from a pioneering expert on the subject.

Review
Stephen Barstow presents fascinating and useful information about his top 80 perennial leafy vegetables including lots of historical references, his and other recipe ideas, along with photos and more. Many of these are easily grown and can be ornamental as well as great edibles. This will be a really useful book helping extend the range of food plants for gardeners. Martin Crawford, director of the Agroforestry Research Trust, author and agroforestry expert

About the Author

Stephen Barstow has devoted thirty years to trialing perennial vegetables from around the world. It is unlikely that anyone anywhere has tried as many different species of edible plants – just witness his salad comprising 538 varieties in 2003 – earning him the title of ‘Extreme Salad Man’! Stephen’s garden in Norway has over 2,000 edible plants, and each has an ethnobotanical story to tell.

Great book on little-known vegetables for the gardener and forager
By Sam Thayer
Barstow's book provides a fresh and in-depth look at a number of largely forgotten and ignored--but excellent--vegetables. Based on his personal experience as well as extensive book research, it fits a great deal of information into a small space. Reading it gives you the feeling that Stephen had about six thousand pages he could have included, but pared them down to normal book size. In other words, he's not a journalist who just scratched the surface of his subject--he's been living with these plants as the centerpiece of his life for decades. Although not specifically a book on wild edibles, most of the plants are available in the wild, and I would rank this as one of the most important books about wild edibles published in the last 10 years. The photos are superb, and the book does a very good job of explaining what parts are eaten at what stage.

Stunningly beautiful
By P. Visser
What a gorgeous looking book. The pictures are stunningly beautiful. There is so much knowledge in the book, that even though I live in a different climate from the author's, my garden is in a temperate climate zone in Oregon (near the Portland area) and I can implement many of the plants and flowers in my yard. The author has done a fabulous job in sharing the knowledge he has gathered throughout his lifetime. A wonderful read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves nature.

Superb. A Classic in an important field.
By David Findlay
Around the World in 80 Plants, by Stephen Barstow, is a very important book that I highly recommend to gardeners, and especially to Permaculturists. It is a classic book about the cultivation of edible perennials.

It includes the author’s top 80 perennial leafy green vegetables, out of his collection of 2,000 plants that grow in his home garden.

Perennial edibles are valuable because they are the most easily grown, and the most efficient, producers of food. They do not need to be planted each year. They can be cared for without undue disturbance of soil, which conserves healthy soil biology. Most of them have deeper roots than annuals. Their deep roots access more nutrients, so they need less fertilization. They usually require less water after they are established. They are usually less troubled by diseases and insects than annuals. They have a very resilient ability to survive climate challenges, which is valuable in these times of climate instability. They are especially useful in colder climates, as they grow faster than most annuals in Spring, because their roots are already established.

Many of these plants grow in the wild, so foragers will learn much from this book.

All these plants thrive in temperate climates. In fact, the author grows them in his garden near Trondheim, Norway which is only 200 miles South of the Arctic Circle. Soils in Northern Scandinavia are not very fertile, although the author has worked to improve his soil. He can grow these plants successfully, therefore, anybody in a temperate climate also can. This is very empowering.

The author is the Master of this subject. He has 30 years experience in collecting, growing, propagating, harvesting and eating edible perennials. I am very up on this subject, widely read, with more than the average person’s practical experience. And yet, I learned an immense amount about many plants, and many aspects of care of plants, as well as their preparation as food, that were new to me.

He gives specific cultivation, propagation and harvest instructions for each plant, based on years of success. He cites sources for seeds and plants. He includes numerous tasty sounding recipes, some raw and some cooked. The plants are accompanied by good photographs that clearly show their significant features.

The plants that he has chosen are all beautiful and most would be lovely additions to a garden grown for aesthetic reasons. He tells fascinating stories about his discovery of the plants, and of their use by cultures around the world.

There is an extensive Bibliography and an excellent Index.

The author's intention is clearly to be very helpful to the gardener’s success. He does this with care and integrity. He has a delightful sense of humor.

The depth and range of information on this subject will greatly speed your acquiring skill in this increasingly important branch of agriculture. I recommend this book without qualification.
