Food as art and culture

This book profiles eight Indian women, brought together from all corners of India by the happenstance of urban coexistence in the Mumbai neighborhood of Dharavi. During a cultural arts project of the Dharavi Biennale led by author Prajna Desai, they gathered to talk about themselves (a novel experience for some) and the cooking they do every day at home. For an American reader, the book turns a bright light on their lives and especially their Inspired cookery, which "provides the foundation for the life of a family".
The book includes meticulous recipes for their work; here I think a trip to an Indian market might be helpful; there are ingredients not available at most corner stores in the U.S.: whole cardamom pods,curry leaves (kadipatta), etc. But an American cook shouldn't be afraid to jump in; these are everyday recipes so not overly complex, and the sumptuous photos of the women during the cooking process and of the finished dishes, along with the detailed text, educate about the process and expected results.
In the end, this book is a snapshot about one aspect of life in a diverse urban neighborhood. Author Desai breathes life into her descriptions, inviting us to learn and understand these women's lives and art.

Telling stories and building community over a delicious meal

An inspiring read, The Indecisive Chicken masters the art of story-telling and food history, and brings to life, eight women and their favorite recipes. I enjoyed the book immensely. It traverses the boundaries between incisive and beautiful writing and evocative imagery, so that even though you can love it as a coffee table book and give it pride of place in your home, you can also read it for the in-depth content, and cook with it in your kitchen. The recipes are detailed, yet easy to follow, and unusual for those familiar and new to various Indian cuisine. Dharavi is a remarkable place, and typically one reads stories of doom and gloom or boot strapping business success from Asia's largest slum. The Indecisive Chicken breaks new ground by bringing to the forefront the lives of eight women and their food, and also begins to cultivate a sense of community among those women through the project. Highly recommend for food lovers, history lovers, and global arm chair travelers.

Some ingredients are also off the beaten path, and the english is a bit broken and/or lost in translation.
